Hello everyone!
My name is Valeria. This is my first week of college, and this is my first blog for this RWS 100 community, which I'm both excited and nervous about. I'm currently majoring in biochemistry, but it's been a crazy first week, so I'm considering switching to a bio BS. In the future, I hope to attend medical school and become a surgeon. I've been interested in medicine since I was a child, and despite it being a long career, I can't imagine myself in any other profession.

 Reading and writing experience

Throughout my childhood, my mom always tried to instill in me the art of reading, but I didn't understand it. I didn't like reading, I was bored a lot, and I would often prefer a movie to a book. I remember we always went to a store called Sanborns in Tijuana, and there were a lot of books. I always wanted a different one because it was based on a movie I'd already seen. My mom would tell me, "You're not even going to read that," but I ended up buying it to try to get me to like reading. But it wasn't until high school that I began to develop a love for reading and writing.

To understand a little bit about why I started reading, you should know that I didn't start studying in the United States until my 9th grade. I knew English, but I still didn't feel confident speaking it. That's why I was afraid of not being able to answer in all my classes. Because of this, my favorite class was Spanish. Only it wasn't a typical Spanish class like I was used to in Tijuana; it was AP Spanish. There I had the opportunity to strengthen my writing and it began to be something I enjoyed, my essays in other classes became easier to do, my writing flowed naturally, however, reading still seemed a bit tedious to me, until the following year, when I took AP Spanish Literature, a class that made me enjoy good reading, during that year, I read around 42 texts, varied between stories, poems, essays and works of Spanish-speaking authors throughout the years. Thanks to this class, I discovered different writing styles like Miguel de Cervantes does in “Don Quijote de la Mancha,” and I learned writing strategies from different authors, as well as I understood that writing is a way of expressing oneself, communicating ideals, emotions or thoughts, as in “Hombres necios que acusáis,” a text where Sor Juana questions society.

My literacy spaces

My favorite hobby is painting. I love painting. It relaxes me a lot, and I feel like it's a way I reflect my emotions and express myself, just like when I write in a diary. I must admit I don't keep a diary as such; I'm one of those distrustful people who thinks their little brother will sneak into their room and read it. However, I firmly believe that there are tough days when we need to write, whether to yell at the paper, to avoid exploding at others, to create a revolution of paper and ink, or just so that thoughts, emotions, and unanswered questions aren't just in our heads. I feel the same way when I paint, only instead of a sad tone when I write, I use dark colors in my paintings, and instead of a pencil, I use a brush to express everything I feel.

I've always been good at interacting with other people, although I tend to be a bit introverted. However, over time, that fades. Like many here, I think the place where I interact the most is at school and obviously with my friends, since personally, the more confidence I have in someone, the more extroverted I am, and I don't mince my words, I like to talk about everything, and I adapt well to any topic of conversation, as long as it's not economics, since I'm terrible at it, and I don't know how I passed my high school class. For those who love economics, this is not your blog. For those who love art culture, welcome, and thank you for reading to the end.
